Berryz Kobo x ℃-ute Cross Talk 08: Nakajima Saki x Sugaya Risako

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Hello! Project Kids in 2012, a book entitled Rival - 12 shoujo no 10-nen monogatari - (The 10-year legend of the 12 girls) was released. The book contains 2-page discussions between various pairings of the girls, covering all 66 possible combinations. In the process of reading this book, I'll be putting up some highlights as I read through the interviews.

Nakajima Saki X Sugaya Risako

><(((°>

Looking as much as I can from the outside, there doesn't seem to be an easy-to-get common point between the two of you. But unexpectedly, you're good friends?

Nakajima: We had activities together as the unit 'Guardians 4', but didn't we start really talking with one another from the play 'Sengoku Jieitai'!?

Sugaya: Nope, you've got it wrong! It was the movie 'Ousama Game'. That's when we became good friends.

Either way, it's pretty recent. What did you think of one another in the past?

Nakajima: I thought that Risako was on good terms with (Suzuki) Airi. But that's because I'm the type of girl who's unable to get chummy with the girls of Berryz Kobo.

Sugaya: What 'type' is that supposed to be (laughs)!?

><(((°>

Sugaya: I thought that Nacky was really reserved. But when I tried talking to her, it turned out that she does as she pleases (laughs).

Sugaya: Some time ago, when we were staying over at a hotel for a Hello! Project concert, I received a message from Nacky at night (laughs).

Nakajima: Ah! You're going to talk about it (laughs)!?

Sugaya: You were saying something coy on the lines of 'Can I come over?' Even as a fellow woman, it made my chest squeeze (laughs).

><(((°>

Well then, when Saki-chan looks at Berryz Kobo, and Risako-chan looks at ℃-ute, what do you see in both of your groups?

Nakajima: They're definitely rich in personality. We've danced together at concerts as BeriKyuu, haven't we? With Berryz Kobo included, since Berryz Kobo have lots of members who put themselves out there, it almost gets to the point where I worry about ℃-ute getting buried.

Sugaya: This isn't from the past, but pretty recently, I feel like [℃-ute] has really changed. From my eyes, ℃-ute became noisy (laughs).

Nakajima: Eh? Noisy!?

Sugaya: Well, not like 'Keep quiet!', but you're always full of spirit, you're noisy in a good way. Even after the end of a concert, you'd be earnestly talking all the time.

Nakajima: Ah, we do (laughs).

Sugaya: For Berryz Kobo, once we're done with a concert, things get quiet. When we have 2 performances in a day, we rest in silence before the second performance. At those times, ℃-ute would still be energetic.

Nakajima: I think that Berryz Kobo are also lively, but there's a difference in how we're lively. It gets really noisy when we're on the move in a bus. You guys would start playing shiritoriI was like 'No way!?' (laughs).

Sugaya: That would be Chii (Tokunaga Chinami).

Nakajima: Indeed (laughs). When ℃-ute talks, everyone talks; but everyone sleeps when it's time to sleep, we go to the extremes. Chinami's always talking (laughs).

But it's a question of how much stamina the ℃-ute members have, isn't it!? That's what this is about, right?

Sugaya: That's what I've been wondering about (laughs).

Nakajima: Not that much (laughs)! It's just that on days with 2 performances, between the first and second performance, we really have no time, so we get hasty, and so our voices get louder, and we get noisy. We don't have energy (laughs). Also, since it's Chisato and Mai doing the talking, it seems energetic.

Sugaya: Is that so? For Berryz Kobo as well, if Chii wasn't talking, it'd be a bit quieter. Since when Chii's really energetic, she'll stand on a chair, and laugh a hearty 'Wahaha!' by herself.

><(((°>

Sugaya: All of ℃-ute really dance in unison, and I think that's really great. The interlude for 'Kiss Me Aishiteru' is so complicated, yet you move as one, which is cool. ℃-ute's moves during interludes are generally always cool. It's got a snappiness and sharpness to it. It's something that we don't have.

><(((°>

Sugaya: If Nacky were to enter Berryz Kobo now, I feel like you'd dye your hair, get your ears pierced, and you'd be in charge of dealing out tsukkomis (laughs). Towards Momo? You'd be like 'You've got things wrong! (laughs). It'd be a tsukkomi packed with love, but it'd be pretty sharp in the end.
